Who is Leslie Frazier?

He has been the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings since taking over for the departed Mike Tomlin in 2007.

Since that time, Frazier’s Vikings defense team ranks 3rd in NFL with 131.0 sacks. Including being first in 2009 with 48.0.

In 2008 the defense was ranked 6th overall and followed that up by being ranked 6th again in 2009.

In his first season with the Vikings in 2007, the team allowed just 3.1 yards per carry to opposing running backs, ranking No.1 against the run in the NFL. The Vikings have been ranked first vs.the run for the last 3 seasons, becoming the only team in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

As a player, Frazier was a part of the 1985 Chicago Bears team that went on to win Super Bowl XX. During that season, Frazier led the team with 6 interceptions, but his career was cut short due to a knee injury he suffered returning a punt late in the first half of that Super Bowl.

Frazier began his coaching career in 1988 when he became the very first head coach at Trinity College in Illinois. He remained at Trinity for 9 seasons winning a pair of Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference titles before interviewing and eventually accepting a position as the defensive backs coach at the University of Illinois in 1997.

In 1999, Frazier joined first time Head Coach Andy Reid as the Defensive Backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. During this time, he met and worked with Brad Childress until 2003 when he became the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. While there, he helped turn the unit into a group that increased takeaways from 24 in 2003 to 36 in 2004. The Bengals Defense improved from #28 in total yards allowed in 2003 to #19 in 04.

In 2005, Frazier became a Special Assistant to the Head Coach as well as Defensive Backs Coach for the Indianapolis Colts. During his time in Indy the Colts passing defense improved from 15th in 2005 to 2nd in 2006.

The pinnacle of his coaching career came on February 4, 2007 when the Colts beat the Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Brad Childress wasted no time as just four days later, on February 8, 2007, he was named the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings.

This is Frazier’s12th season as an NFL coach. Prior to this year, Frazier had suffered only 1 losing season. His first season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. He has coached on seven playoff teams and been a part of six division championships.

Frazier holds a degree in business administration and works closely with “All-Pro Dad”, an organization that stresses the importance of fathers taking an active role in the lives of their children and putting family first.

He and his wife Gale have 3 children: Kieron, Chantel and Corey.

There’s really no magic coach out there. You win with players. Unless of course you could get Tony Dungy!
