The running theory surrounding the Wilf family’s pursuit of a new stadium in Minnesota is that they would prefer another roofed stadium, or at least one with retractable abilities. After all, the NFL has made it fairly clear that a Super Bowl would not be played in cold weather, and the financial benefits of hosting a Super Bowl are immense.
Financial benefits may not be enough to trump Wilf’s competitive nature, however, as both the Giants and Bears offered financial compensation had the Wilf allowed the past two gmaes to be moved to New York and Chicago respectively. Wilf, as we know, declined these offers with hopes of maintaining some home field advantage.
Now, according to Sid Hartman, Wilf has openly expressed his desire to see more open air football in Minnesota.
“Football should be played outdoors,” Wilf said, “and for the Vikings in the past, the weather has given the Vikings a big advantage.”
Coming off of a week in which he hosted Vikings greats like Bud Grant and Fran Tarkenton, got a taste for outdoor football at TCF Bank Stadium, and began meeting with State leaders about stadium options in the midst of a multi-billion dollar deficit, the statement is quite an interesting one.

Zgyi may be seeking two things from the folks at the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission:
1. Replacement of the teflon roof with a retractable – open air roof to be available for August 2011. This facility would have a two or three year lease.
2. Agreement on financial plan and public contributions for a privately-owned ‘state of the art’ open or retractable roof stadium to be under construction for completion by the start of the 2013-14 season.
the Wilfs are just positioning themselves as an “open air” fan so when the price of covered stadium comes up, they’ll say they didn’t want it…….keeps their contribution to the project down!
