Shedding Further Light On Mallett’s Character Concerns

I know this isn’t directly Vikings related, but this time of year there is very little actual Vikings news available.

However, since the Vikings are almost certain to draft a quarterback in April, we will be doing our best to look at each one that’s available as closely as possible.  We will also be looking at prospects of interest at other positions between now and the draft.

So, with all that said, I want to point out some information about Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett’s supposed character concerns that have been rumored but greatly unidentified in previous publications.  Those concerns are sure to be a hot topic around here for the next couple of months.

A couple of months ago, the folks at NFL Draft Monster had an anonymous source shed some light on at least some of Mallett’s character concerns.  They have a policy, however, that requires them to have two sources before they run with a story which, by the way, is a refreshingly honest way to do business these days.

Well, on January 20th, they had a second source (again, anonymous) offer up some information that corroborated what the previous source had stated.

Both sources are described as “inside the Arkansas program.”

The sources bring up concerns of drug use.  One source even claims to have personally witnessed Mallett using marijuana and cocaine.

Mallett used a reporter in Northwest Arkansas to publically deny the claims, but NFL Draft Monster stands by their story.

If the Vikings have reason to believe these allegations are true, Mallett may not even be on their draft board come April.

While I am a fan of the Vikings taking an offensive linemen in round 1 and specifically Nate Solder, all this report is, is BS.

It is called blowing smoke somewhere (and I think most know where they are trying to blow it) or a smoke screen.

As usual, it is an unnamed person spreading the gospel about Mallett.

Hmmmm … I wonder if it is a person for a team that drafts in the mid to late first round?

Why wouldn’t other teams NOT want to see him drop right into their laps?

Unless someone comes up with evidence then it is more responsible to not even mention on this site.

Interesting take, and I agree that tis the season for smokescreens. This report was unique, however, compared to previous ones as the sources were not NFL scouts but rather people from “within Arkansas” whom I see no reason for them to want to see his draft stock fall. People have their reasons, however.

The other reason I thought this report was worth mentioning was because he thought it was worth denying.

Generally, I find readers to be intelligent enough to sort out these types of stories as they see fit, just like you did. I don’t attempt to make their minds up for them.

      Thanks for the comment!
