RICE: “I hope to remain a Viking”

Sidney Rice recently updated his blog, most of which focused on his current trip to China, and his future travel plans this offseason.

Rice, however, made a brief statement about his pending status with the Minnesota Vikings.

“Everbody’s asking me about the labor situation,” said Rice, “but it’s really out of our hands now as players. Just have to sit back and wait. I’m sure a lot of people are nervous, not knowing what to do with themselves or when we’ll be reporting to camp. This is the time of year when most players start thinking about getting in shape and doing what they have to do to get ready to be on the football field.”

“I have no contract right now but I’m still a Viking. I hope to remain a Viking. Hopefully the players and owners will get something done. I’m anxious to get to next season.”

The Vikings recently passed on an opportunity to place a franchise tag on Rice, and instead opted to use the tag on Chad Greenway.  Rice instead might be looking at being tendered as a restricted free agent depending on the outcome of the CBA negotiations, but he could also be looking at unrestricted free agency.

So, why am I picking up ‘Rice to the Redskin’ rumors?

Analysis: Always count on the Redskin to go get what they want with GM Bruce Allen and coach Mike Shanahan teaming up in a draft. They need a quarterback, and they could have to move up to get one. A number of teams will listen to offers. If Redskin could sign Sidney Rice, if and when free agency ever starts, that would go a long way toward taking care of a big need at receiver. Otherwise, they might have to take a wideout here if the QBs are gone and Rice can’t be signed. If all else fails, they still need a corner.
