Berrian Could Be Cut This Week

While the clock keeps ticking towards a March 4th lockout, some teams might feel compelled to make some moves while they still can.

The Bears recently released three former starters (Adrian Peterson will be pleased to learn one of them was linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer who caused three of his seven fumbles in 2009) and a number of other teams have released players.

According to Adam Schefter, Vikings receiver Bernard Berrian could be cut in the next two days.

On one hand, the notion is not at all surprising, as Berrian’s production has fallen way off the map in the last two seasons.  That lack of production no longer matches his paycheck.

Berrian will receive a small raise in 2011 bringing his base salary up to $3.9 million with a potential to earn $6.2 million if certain incentives are reached.  In 2012, Berrian’s base salary takes a big jump up to $6.9 million.

On the other hand, I would be a tad surprised to see Berrian cut this week.

Berrian made comments after the season that he and Leslie Frazier had a good conversation before departing for the offseason, and expressed excitement about his future role on the team.  Also, the Vikings brass essentially said that no major moves should be expected prior to March 4th.

In addition, the Vikings aren’t exactly swimming with wide receiver depth with Sidney Rice set to test the free agency market.  Percy Harvin is explosive but his migraines unfortunately make him unreliable.  Greg Camarillo has certainly not flourished in the Vikings offense.  Jaymar Johnson has re-signed for a one year deal after being place on IR prior to the 2010 season.  The Vikings added Juaquin Iglesias off the Bears practice squad and also signed Emmanuel Arceneaux from the CFL.

This group does not exactly have “dominant” written all over them.

Berrian has a bad reputation amongst Vikings fans, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stick around.  Fraizer has made multiple indirect references to utilizing specific player skill sets, something which may not have been the case under Brad Childress, and I just have this weird feeling that Berrian is one of the players Frazier thinks could be better utilized.

We should have an answer (for now, anyways) within the next couple of days.

Oh come on Vikes it’s time to cut this unreliable, injury prone, overpaid stone hands. This could be my first major disagreement with Frazier if he keeps this lemon.

You mean aside from the other disagreement about Les not even getting the job as head coach?

  2. Another Blonde Viking says:

I agree. Let’s say “bye bye” to Berrian.

    Go Vikes!
    Go CBA!
    Go New Stadium!

At this point in time, I’ll give Frazier the benefit of the doubt – Childress had a way of sucking the will to live out of some of the players. I mean a good boost of ‘dog gonnit – people like me!’ could be just what Berrian needs (and like Adam says – it ain’t like they’re overflowing with receivers).

Keep him and hope he earns the incentives.

It was without a doubt Childos fault Bernie the glass kept pulling is hammie It’s also Chillys fault Cheech has headaches and Childos fault petrol is $3.50 a gallon.

no you bring in a receiver who wants to earn those millions, he played what 6 games with frazier? and he had how many catches?…oh he had 4 of them, very good mr berrian…heres an extra 6 million…enter GQ magazine

  6. hookem says:

Maybe find a way to restructure his contract? We might need him if Rice bails on us.

  7. Fragile Freds says:

Well said Chris. Take the money and sign someone with a pair, this guy sucks. Heck, Favre wouldn’t even look his way. Let’s not waste time , move on.

  8. Zag says:

I want to give him a second chance after last season, but not for this amount of cash.

I do believe that he could still perform if he were given a role that played to his strengths. Which are… damn.

  9. vk4life says:

Unfortunately for Camarillo he never got alot of opportunities. I say we keep hi around atleast one more year. He is a hard worker and deserves a shot. Berrian in the other hand needs to go we need some fresh faces on the receiving corp. I am hoping Julio Jones drops and we can trade down and still pick him up. BB’s attitude has sucked and his production has went waaaay down.

B squared should be prepared to B cut.

  11. 4eversteve says:

Berrian needs to brush up on his French-Canadian, it will help his transition to the CFL this coming season.

  12. B. Grant says:

If we moved McKinnie to wideout and Barrian to tackle, would we see a decline in the production at either positon? At least BBar could move his feet and BMac could actually hold his ground when a pass came his way.
