Vikings Are “Very Interested In Cam Newton”

Last year at about this time the National Football Post had an article about how high the Vikings were on Virginia cornerback Chris Cook.  In fact, last March they stated that the Vikings “loved” Chris Cook.

This turned out to not be much of a smokescreen as Cook was selected with the 34th pick after the Vikings traded back a few spots.

Recently, NFP gave us some food for thought when they had this to say about the Vikings being “very interested” in Auburn quarterback Cam Newton:

As for the Vikings, they found Newton charismatic in their talks with him at the combine. The plan is for general manager Rick Spielman, head coach Leslie Frazier, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson to travel to Alabama and spend a day with Newton, picking his brain on all things football. The Vikings followed used a similar strategy with Percy Harvin two years ago and Tim Tebow last year. It’s likely they will interview other quarterback draft prospects in the same manner over the next month.

Like with Tebow, the Vikings seem unlikely to have a shot at Newton if they stay where they are, but if their attitude of Newton was upgraded from “very interested” to “love” then perhaps they would be willing to move around to ensure they snag the quarterback.

Oh lord please no. Cant afford to trade up this year with no 3rd rounder already. Thanks again Childo.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, we already have a player with a very similar skill set in Webb , without the baggage. If we are going QB then it should be a pure pocket passer so we have a varied option at the position.

I agree 100% Dynalee. I would prefer we didnt draft one this year unless it is in a later round. I would like to see us trade our 1st rounder for a late 1st round and late 2nd / early 3rd round , then dump our 2nd round pick on Carson Palmer if it is possible to get him. He still has another 5 years or more in him. Then we have someone to “groom” a rookie QB, or Webb if that is who they see a the Vikes future.

And don’t forget… if the lockout persists beyond the 2011 draft… when the time comes to trade for acquiring a guy like Palmer via the draft, it could be for 2012 picks instead. Not saying that makes it better or worse, just saying it is looking possible that free agency (and trades) won’t occur until after the draft.

And for the record, I am with you guys in your assessment of Newton. He would be tempting if he were sitting there at #12, but I am not keen on trading up for him. Gabbert on the other hand…
