Vikings Still Chatting About Adding a Veteran QB

With the lockout wiping out OTAs and mini-camps that are critical in the development of young quarterbacks Christian Ponder and Joe Webb, Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports the Vikings are still discussing bringing in a veteran quarterback this season.

The Vikings have been linked to free agent quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for several years, but the Seattle Seahawks are expected to re-sign their longtime starter once the lockout ends. Due to Vikings quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson’s connections to the Tennessee Titans, where he coached quarterbacks from 2002-09, the Vikings emerged as a pre-draft destination for Vince Young, who the Titans will release this off-season.

Whoever that free agent quarterback is, Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier made it clear who the long-term solutions are.

“In our situation if we were to go that route to bring a veteran in, whatever time that would be, that veteran has to understand how important the chemistry of it is because eventually either Joe or Christian is going to be our long-term answer,” he said. “So it would have to be the right veteran. It goes beyond just knowing the system and playing in the National Football League because you’re trying to build the right locker room also. There are more dynamics involved than just a fact he’s a veteran quarterback.”

Just go with who we have, Frasier.

  2. Fragile Freds says:

Must get a veteran. Ponder won’t know his Asher from his elbow. My man will have just a couple weeks of coaching before game 1, not a good idea.

Vinny is not the “right veteran” as Denzel says, he wants to start and win the job, not put in 6 weeks, grab a Twins cap and sit his ass on the bench. Freds would rather Jumpin’ Joe start, get his ass kicked, then hand over the reigns to Ponder after a couple months of practice.

Trade Bernie the glass for Rosencopter let’s get it going. Copter wears a nice ball cap.

Oh mighty Freds, bow. For some kooky reason I agree with you, especially on the Bernie for Copter deal. One question for you though, do you move jumpin joe to wr or cut Bomar? Rhett is one of the few to show up for workouts in Florida.

Sounds as if Coach Leslie is mailing out a message out to that ‘right veteran’

Coach is saying all the right things to Mr. Right. But who is Mr. Right? Mustn’t be Brunell or Leinhart.

  4. Zag says:

If we had kept Rosenfels, this wouldn’t be an issue. But we didn’t.

Vince Young does not deserve to play in the NFL, but perhaps after the way we bombed last season, we deserve him.

I still think that the ideal answer is Marc Bulger. Vince Young would be the worst possible mentor I could imagine for both Webb and Ponder.

  5. CalVkg says:

as much as i think it’s better to let ponder sit awhile before he gets thrown into the starting spot, it won’t matter to our chances of winning a title, it’s gonna be painful this next year or two. so, yeah, they’ll get a vet training QB, you can hear it from frazier in that latest video on the strib’s site, then let the QBs and team develop

i’m just bummed that i won’t be watching as many vikes games out here since they took down the pirate game sites and the purple won’t merit many nationally shown games. i sure as hell won’t pay the damn billionaire’s ransom to watch on a premium channel, either

The Mud Bowl! If you have about an hour or so check it out. Classic!
Coach, if youre listening, this game was perfectly coached. a thing of beauty. An onsides kick when youre up by 14! Wow. Foreman was a beast, the O-line was tough. Defense was smothering, Mr. Krause got his career tying pick. The field was terrible, but thats what made it great. We had the ball for 12 minutes in the 3rd quarter. The Rams had not been beat at home. At one point 22 straight runs. And I had forgot about Manfred Moore. Check it out if you can, but you really have to watch it all to get the full effect. It has 9 parts.

Nuzum had to be sick to his stomach after just missing a chance to get that offside kick… The spin doctor took a beating,Whata running game for the conditions!!!

Wish they would go back to the old uniforms…

    • Malte says:

wow the run the ball a lot in that games. They throw it like max 10 times a game 😛
Things is kinda the opposite nowadays

    • B. Grant says:

Thank you, cart. I enjoyed that immensely! I never could decide which I enjoyed more: bringing those Hollywood boys to Minnesota and freezing them into huddling little girls, or if it was better to go out there and humiliate them in front of their own fans. Tough call.

Lotta good points guys. Chilli’s hatred of Rosenfels is killing the Vikings now and hurt last year as well. Last years team “could” have competed for the playoffs. I’ve been vocal in thinking that Bulger could be the “right guy”, but I’ve also read that Rams coaches felt he was shell shocked and had lost his confidence. If he hasn’t lost his confidence I think he’d be the perfect “bridge” for the next year or two. Don’t want to see us give up a draft pick for a rental, free agents only!! If the right guy isn’t available go with Ponder and throw in some Webb packages and keep it interesting. Love to see the old uniforms come back. Never liked the change. The perfect time to change back would be the opening of the new stadium. (Roof open)

Loved the vid it brought back memories of watching that game live. I was so proud of that team because we were huge underdogs that game but we controlled from start to end. I wish Wilf would come to his senses and go back to the old unis. Wish they would take fan vote before making major changes to “OUR” Vikings.

  9. Purple Charlie says:

    Dr K,
That would be a perfect time to change the uniforms back.

    Dynalee,
Won’t happen, But I’m with ya 100% on the fan vote.

  10. Randy Perrin says:

Michael Robinson, a FA running back who is working out with McNabb in Arizona told John Clayton of ESPN that he believes that McNabb will be in Minnesota by Week 1. John Clayton stated that “McNabb might be a nice fit to buy time for Ponder to develop.”

I think it comes down to whether McNabb would be willing to be a mentor type QB to step in for only a year or two. I’m from Syracuse and grew up watching McNabb so I do have a soft spot for him. I do like Hasselback as the vet mentor over McNabb but I wouldn’t be upset with us picking up McNabb if he’s willing to play the part. I wouldn’t mind Bulger either.
