New England with Interest in Signing WR Sidney Rice?

Pro Football Weekly talked this past week about New England adding a veteran WR through free agency, and one name that was on their short list was Vikings possible free agent to be Sidney Rice.

On the condition of anonymity, scouts are often capable of filling a notebook, which was the case recently when one was asked about the Patriots and Randy Moss. “I was surprised the Patriots did not address the receiver position in the draft. The offense was not the same without Randy Moss. I would guess they have a plan to address the position once the league opens. If you look at who is out there, there are a couple guys that would make a lot of sense. Bill (Belichick) could help Chad Ochocinco the way he did Corey Dillon. … Santonio Holmes would look good in New England. Sidney Rice would fit the bill, but with the new rules, he might not be able to go anywhere. (Panthers WR) Steve Smith would be great in New England. He could stretch the field. There are going to be some good options out there.”

It would be out-of-character for Patriot/Belichick to enter bidding for high-priced free agent.

Patriot do reclamation projects such as Moss and Corey Dillon. Check out Belichick’s comments in Halberstram’s ‘The Education of a Coach’. Great book.

Better fit with Patriot concept would include under-performing veterans such as Deion Branch, Plaxico, Ocho Cinco, Steve Smith and possibly even Bernard Berrian.

    Discuss amongst yourselves.

It seams certain that the Viking will add a veteran QB via Free Agency or trade and most writers can assume who the most likely of the candidates will be. I’m pretty sure I never heard Fraizer say any player by name unless it was to say that the team will not be extending an offer to a player. Quoting an unidentified source from an NFL team saying specific names of players who are under contract. (at least as far as the CBA is currently structured during this lockout) This is by definition “Tampering”. Squid is ours, at least for now. Screw those guys!

Screw the Pats they already did us last year!

I guess it could be a possibility but I don’t see it happening. I could see Rams, Bears, Brown, and Jags opening their checkbooks for him IF he becomes a FA.

With Falcon having drafted Julio Jones it appears Michael Jenkins is 3rd receiver. Falcon are OC Musgrave’s former team. Jenkins is an 8 year starter with similar skills as Berrian.

Falcon also have interest rumored in Ray Edwards. No one knows what Free Agency will look like but in a collective bargaining agreement the NFLPA* has an interest in seeing wider use. Stands to reason the Owners will put more liberal free agency terms into any final negotiated agreement.

If Ray Edwards is not Free Agent I could see Falcon dangling some of Musgrave’s former favorites in trade.
