Add Some New Turf To That

Way back in December I asked Steve Maki of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission if the Metrodome was going to need new turf after the roof, and a whole ton of water, fell onto the field.

That question, and many others, was one that Mr. Maki refused to answer.

Maki did, however, promise to keep Vikings Gab up to date on the issues I brought up via my questions to him.  Then, of course, I never heard from him again.

Six months later, someone in a more established media outlet finally got up the nerve to ask that very same question, and they were able to get an incredibly political answer.

“We believe the turf will be fine,” said commission chair Ted Mondale in June. “However, with the amount of rain that’s come in and with the boards on top of it, there may be parts of the turf or all of it that needs to be replaced.”

Last month, Maki stated that the turf was in “good shape,” but this is the same guy that declared there was “no structural issue” at the Metrodome… just hours before it collapsed.

So, really, it shouldn’t come as any huge surprise that the Metrodome’s turf does indeed need to be replaced.

“We knew this was a possibility,” Mondale said on Tuesday.

MSFC’s Executive Director Bill Lester explained, “Because of the collapse and the aftermath of the collapse, there was an excessive amount of water on the field for an extended amount of time.”

The MSFC received bids ranging from $476,000 to $784,000 and Lester plans on recommending the Commission goes with the lowest bidder despite the fact that they did not go with the lower bidder when the turf was replaced one year ago due to concerns about player safety.

It is unclear if insurance will pay for the replacement turf.

The installation of the turf is expected to be completed by August 18th, well before the Dome will be needed for preseason games.

I have to wonder if Muski is updating his resumé.

Ted Mondale & Bill Lester…the hard hitting team known on the streets as Mo-Lester, will get this taken care of. No worries, my purple brethren.

More like that ventriloquist and his “dummy” Lest who you calling dummy? Just like any politician or executive level guy, just shim sham them and they will forget . They are going to do this same crap as the Vikings move out of Minnesota. Keep putting it off like they have for the last ten years. Then they will claim to have “tried their hardest to get it done but “everyone else wouldn’t play ball” .

The metro barn will be all nice and new almost. I wonder if the Vikings will play there past the lease if the Arden Hills thing goes through. They have just this year. What will they do with that place they’re now spending all this money on? If the insurance pays for it, great. I don’t live in Minneapolis, what else do they do with the dome? It would be nice to see one more loud blast of a season out of that place.
