McKinnie’s Status Is Unknown

The first day of Vikings training camp ended up featuring one very, very interesting development.

Starting left tackle Bryant McKinnie was placed on the non-football injury list.

This news is especially intriguing since the Vikings coincidentally, or perhaps not, signed former Colts starting left tackle Charlie Johnson to a three year deal.  Speculation initially centered around Johnson being placed at the right guard position as a replacement for the injured Anthony Herrera, but now one can’t help but wonder what is really going on.

Both McKinnie and coach Leslie Frazier were keeping the truth close to their vests and neither revealed any details about the decision.

It is possible that McKinnie’s weight is an issue despite his offseason claims that he was going to get back down to his college playing weight.

Rumors surfaced about a week ago that the Vikings wanted to restructure McKinnie’s contract but so far nothing has become of it.  Also, Vikings fans constantly talk about their desire to see McKinnie traded if a suitable alternative (Johnson?) could be found.

“One of the things we want to be able to do with Bryant and a couple of other guys is just take them through a period where we get them where we feel that they’re ready to play for us when the season rolls around,” Frazier said of the situation. “So, we’re taking it slow with him and a couple of other guys.”

McKinnie has tweeted throughout the offseason that he has been need of chiropractic attention on his back, so that is another possibility.

There might be very little to this, but the covert nature in which this is being handled will do little to squelch any conspiracy theories that hack bloggers (anyone know one?) or fans can come up with.

The smart money says Ol’ Big mac weighs around 450 and is out of shape (What’s new?)

Trade the olf while can get at least a 6th rounder out of the loafer.

  2. CalVkg says:

either he dropped his wallet or a big expensive bottle of champagne on his foot

    that would hurt

  3. Zag says:

    He’s probably just too fat.

Sorry Bryant, but playing tennis doesn’t cut it in the offseason, not when you’re an NFL player.

He should’ve spent more time in the weightroom and a little less time popping bottles in clubs with scandalous ladies.

If it’s worse than that, I’d be worried. Charlie Johnson has a Superbowl ring, but all indications are that he benefited from Manning as a quick-release QB and may not be a go-to LT for us.

The reserve/non-football injury list means their players paychecks and bonuses can be withheld. McKinnie is due a $500,000 roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus.

So, the 5 pounds Bryant was going to lose playing tennis didn’t materialize. He was asked to restructure his $4.9 million salary but refused.

Can’t believe the Viking didn’t anticipate this event as it was much anticipated on VikingsGab.

McKinnie’s a slug. He just doesn’t get it. He thinks we are the one’s that don’t get it. He just waddles his fat butt down to the bank and cashes his checks. It’s to bad because with the proper attitude and work ethic he could really be good. He would feel better and make even more money. My money says we are drafting a LT in the first round of next years draft.
