Injuries Begin To Pile Up

It was to be expected that, after a long lockout in which players potentially did very little, that injuries would be making their way into training camps.

Last week, some teams experienced significant injuries to their roster, and the Vikings started this week with a few of their own worth keeping an eye on:

Visanthe Shiancoe:  A tweaked hamstring sent Shank to the locker room on Monday.  Remember, this is likely a similar injury that was thought to cause a huge drop in production for the veteran tight end last season.  This could open the door for youngsters Kyle Rudolph and Allen Reisner to impress coaches even more than they already have.

Percy Harvin:  The Vikings best receiver and return man had to sit out for part of Monday’s practice due to being winded and sore ribs.  Leslie Frazier said he didn’t think Harvin would be out for long.

Tyrell Johnson:  Embroiled in one of camp’s best position battles, Jamarca Sanford may now have the upper hand in the bid to be a starting safety since Johnson tweaked his hamstring.  Johnson just always seems to be held out of the starting lineup for one reason or another.

Steve Hutchinson:  This has been going on for a long time now, but Hutch saw limited action in practice due to pectoral and shoulder soreness.  The veteran often gets rested during camp, and the Vikings might want to use that chance to see other players performing in the starting lineup.  Hutchinson had shoulder surgery prior to the 2010 season.

Anthony Herrera:  The veteran guard remains on the PUP list because of his knee and triceps injuries.  It is unclear what the timeline is for his return, but it would not be a shocker if he wasn’t ready to start in week one.

Kenny Onatolu:  The linebacker was injured early in camp and has been seen wearing a walking boot.  He remains out of practice and his recovery timeline is also unclear.

Adrian Awasom:  Despite some impressive flashes on defense and on special teams, Awasom remains a long shot to make the final roster, and missing Monday’s practice with illness sure isn’t going to help his odds, especially with seventh round pick D’Aundre Reed continuing to sack the backup quarterbacks on a regular basis.

Marcel Gipson:  The undrafted defensive back has been absent from camp since Friday due to the death of his grandmother.  He now has to make the choice between returning to camp and attending the funeral.  If Gipson realizes how slim his chances are of even making the practice squad, he will probably opt to attend the funeral.  I would.

Simeon Castille:  The young defensive back dropped out of practice for an unknown reason.
