Ponder Says He’s Been Told Vikings Won’t Draft a QB

Quarterback Christian Ponder appeared on the Dan Patrick Show today and was asked if he has any assurances the Vikings would not draft a quarterback:

I think this is a stupid mistake. I’m sorry Christian, but the hip injury is already recurring, and you haven’t even played a whole season. Joe Webb is a great backup, but, what happens then?

  2. VikingsDude says:

Ponder will be an OK QB with a line to protect him. His lack of arm strength allows defenders to easily plot to catch & catch his passes

It is a little concerning with the hip injury reoccurring, hopefully he doesn’t weak bone structure. I like Kellen Moore kid out Boise State, reminds me of Drew Brees . The so called expects believe he could still be available as late as the 5th round, might be worth the pick if he is still there when the Vikings select in the 5th round. I still think Ponder can get the job done if they ever decide to improve the O-line. Any quarterback in this league behind the O-line of the Vikings better have really good life insurance. The defensive secondary was really bad, but I believe O-line was the overall major glaring weakness on this team. Forcing the defense to be on the field for most of the game in conjunction with the injuries forcing rookies into action. Chris Cook didn’t help matters, if he is cut loose by the Vikings, I hope they recoup the money they paid him if he is found guilty of the charges against him. I wonder if he will remember the Vikings stood by him if he makes it to free agency and avoids prison, probably not!

Why are they annointing this guy the chosen one? Good. Then they can draft the Oklahoma State WR, (WHO WE NEED,SEE MEGATRON 2nd round left tackle) and Webb can take over when Ponder, the Brady Quinn-esque 12 year old gets knocked out of the game. Sticking with this kid, drafting him, is making me sick! I don’t mind him competing for the job, but he’s being coddled. I hate that. It’s not like he was Peyton Manning in college. And, football uniforms have stripes. The Vikings uniforms SUCK! All time low. Nothing to lead me to believe it will improve.

  6. BostonWolf says:

QBacks need to inspire their teams. From some comments by Viking players, Ponder does not, and Joe Webb does. That leads me to think the Vikings need to draft a higher profile QB who has little more fire.

  7. Vikadan11 says:

Webb and Ponder in no order have more than enough talent to do the job ~ But neither had the talent around him to show what he can do ~ Put a OL and a great #1 WR (Blackmon ?) on the roster and both of these young men could improve greatly ~

I for one hope this can all be worked in this offseason (OL & WR) but there are a lot of holes in the roster and the defense needs just as much help ~ The DB’s need to be reworked unless they saw something in a few of the young guy ????? I’m just saying not believing ~

I hope Webb & Ponder play lights out and it’s a dang hard fight for the starting job ~ Its whats best for the Vikings and the fans ~ Sometimes we as fans fall in love with a player (me too) we want ~ Both of these guys have the over all talent to be starters in the NFL and good one too ~ And while it isn’t easy to wait that what the Vikings have to do ~ I dont have a dog in this fight as long as one of them is showing improvement when OTA’s start ~ Both Ponder & Webb will be at Winter Park most of the offseason working with the coaches ~ I love the fact they call each other great friends and talk about the battle that will take place come TC for the QB job ~

These guys are on the roster now ( so they are not drafting a QB based on what Rick and Ponder have said) and have to have time to develop ~ The Lions last year and the Bear this year showed that if you take Webb’s running lanes away he isn’t any thing special ~ It part of his game ~ So he still needs time to improve his pocket presence ~ Ponder showed before the hip pointer and the lost of Jenkins that he could make a defense pay ~ Webb never got to play with Jenkins ~ And while Jenkins isn’t great team still had to cover him because he caught most everything that come his way and should be a fine #3 WR this year ~ He would have give Webb another weapon he could count on ~ He only had Harvin and others who seem to play ok to good here and there and never for a full game < same for Ponder ~

I feel very good about where the Vikings are with their QB’s ~ Not to long ago Sage and the press both said they were talking contract for the #3 spot ~

I think the vikings should consider griffen from Baylor with the third pick.He is Cam Newton of this years draft.
Christian Ponder should have been a third round pick last year.
He didn’t show more than Joe Webb, and he was a seventh round selection.
Ponder just doesn’t have the arm strength that elite qbs should have.
I just don’t see how the viking staff can’t see the slow rainbows this guy throws. if he throws beyond thirty yards, its like a hail mary. Please don’t let RG3 slip past that third pick, talent like that is rare.
The vikings don’t want to admit they took Ponder too high, but by the time they admit the mistake,it will be two or three years from now.
Ponder might be a wiz kid in the classroom but the talent isn’t there.
At the very least let Webb compete…..Don’t just hand the team to Ponder.

  9. jo says:

Watch some youtube video of Ponder then look at video of A. rodgers,D. Brees, C.Newton. Be honest a look at the arm strength comparisons. Ponder is the weakest by far.
Vikings draft RG3 so you can compete.

    • Van Brocklin says:

I’m with you all the way. With Webb, he WON the competition. WTF? Why isn’t he the starter? Base it on performance, not on where you where drafted. Ponder is WAY over rated. He wasn’t even near Brady Quinn in stature coming out, and look at Quinn now. OVER RATED. As far as the draft, I say RG3 or Blackmon are the only choices. Can you imagine taking ANY left tackle over Percy or Peterson? Don’t be so STUPID! We need playmakers, OT’s don’t score touchdowns, and Webb or RG3 don’t need an elite tackle to kick ass.

  10. jo says:

Im not bashing ponder…but if you keep him as starter then you will to draft a new o line.
Rg3 can survive without great blockers. Ponder cant create because he isnt a playmaker……he is a system guy. Webb and Rg3 can make something from nothing.
System guys only look good if all pieces are there…

  11. xtap59 says:

What if the unbelievable happens. The Colts trade the pick and a team like Cleveland takes RG3 instead of Luck and the Rams take Blackmon or Kalil and the Vikings have Luck fall into their lap. (I know, highly unlikely) But do the Vikings rethink that statement said to Ponder or trade the pick away?

  12. jo says:

I don’t know why the management would give ponder assurances like that.
If he had played at the level C.Newton played or A.Dalton I would understand.
They dont owe him anything. The only thing I can guess is they dont want to admit that drafting ponder so high was a mistake.
