Vikings Agree to Deal with RB/FB Hilliard

According to Judd Zulgad of ESPN1500, the Vikings have agreed to a deal with 27 year old former Dolphins running back Lex Hilliard. Hilliard who was not tendered by the Dolphins, started 4 games last season, finished with 16 carries for 41 yards and a TD.

Jeremy Fowler stated that it’s a one year deal and the Vikings signed Hilliard primarly because of his blocking ability but consider him a capable runner. He is listed at 5’11, 240 lbs, and at that size he looks the part of a goal line back or a fullback.

Hilliard will join a crowded backfield competing for a roster spot. Peterson and Gerhart are locks while Caleb King, Jordan Todman, Ryan D’Imperio, and Matt Asiata round out the rest of the RB/FB group currently under contract.

The other back out of Montana.
Sixth round draft choice who was situational goal line replacement for Ricky Williams.
Apparently catches ball well out of backfield.

Doesn’t fit with youth drive but Spielman likes ex-Dolphins. You can’t have enough blocking backs but would seem to duplicate Toby Gerhardts attributes.

Hilliard lined up at running back at Montana and should be a productive short-yardage runner at the NFL level. However, he’s probably going to fit better at fullback in the NFL; he doesn’t have great speed or elusiveness. It will also take some time for him to develop as a blocker.

    Poor Man’s Marion Barber

I just don’t understand why the Vikings are signing FB’s in this free agency period, when clearly their weaknesses were the OL and defensive secondary!

WTF is spielman doing? Sure lets sign all the players to run, but lets not get someone too catch the ball…Lets not sign someone who can block for ponder…Heck lets not give hime someone to catch the ball and leave our crappy secondary all alone…WE all know how well that worked last year….Insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result…Spielman is indeed insane
