Brinkley Set to Start in 2012? Other Notes

Brinkley Set to Start?

Rick Spielman shed some light on a few topic from the owners meetings this week. Spielman has not shut the door on re-signing MLB E.J. Henderson but Jasper Brinkley got a vote of confidence from the Vikings GM.

“When Brinkley did step in for E.J., he continued to get better and really started playing well. Especially as we went through the playoffs and the more experience he got,”

Spielman was referring to Brinkley stepping in for E.J. back in 2009 when he broke his femur and was out for the season. Brinkley played well in place of Henderson and was headed for a bigger role last year until he injured his hip and missed the entire 2011 campaign. According to Spielman, Brinkley is now “100 % healthy and ready to roll.”

With the re-signing of Erin Henderson, the Vikings could go with Brinkley as a 2 down MLB next year since he hasn’t shown great coverage skills and allow Chad Greenway and Erin Henderson to take on the nickel duties.

Other Notes

-Christian Ballard could be seeing an increase in playing time next year. “He’s going to be a heck of a player and continue to make a jump,” Spielman stated at the owners meeting. Ballard has shown the ability to play all the position on the defensive line and got a spot start last year in place in nose tackle Remi Ayodele. With Ayodele gone, Letroy Guion and Fred Evans the only other defensive tackles on the roster besides Kevin Williams, Ballard could see himself with an increased load next year. All 3 should have the opportunity to compete for a starting spot and all should be part of the rotation in 2012.

-Compensatory picks should be released sometime this week as the Vikings prepare to get some picks for Sidney Rice and Ray Edwards who both left via free agency last year. Many are suspecting that the Vikings will receive two 4th round picks and we should have those answers sooner than later.

-Vikings hope to re-sign safety Husain Abdullah and reportedly he’s been mulling over an offer from the Vikings. Abdullah started showing promise but has dealt with concussions and will need to prove he can stay healthy.

-Spielman admitted that signing nose tackle Remi Ayodele was a mistake last year. “I’ll put that on me making a mistake, as far as making sure that the players that we sign fit the scheme that we’re trying to run.”

Speilman only proving the fans right that he really doesn’t know what the hell he is doing. God help us!

when can we just admit spielman was a mistake and kick him to the curb

Like to see Ballard develope there in the line, and Griffin at linebacker. Playmakers on defense. Where’s EJ going to go? I mean, really? Have you heard about any interest in him? As far as Erin H., doesn’t look like there were any big offers out there for him, or he would’ve taken one. Not drafted and 1st free agency is not what he wanted. I like him, tho, and EJ, with Brinkly. Like to see them add Claiborne with Cook and Winfield and get a playmaking defense.

The LB market was really slow and recently started warming up. Tough to say where E.J will end up, might have to wait until someone gets injured somewhere but its not even April so plenty of time for teams to generate interest in him. I heard Erin actually had better offers for more money but wanted to stay with the Vikings.

That is VERY interesting. Any word on Hawthorne? My brain tells me there is no way we’ll sign him (especially after reading this article) but he was one of the only guys I, personally, was hoping the Vikings would pursue.

Unlikely though, after seeing Tulloch’s and D’Qwell Jackson’s contracts.

And what happened with Carr? Did he sign yet?

        • Randy Perrin says:

I like Hawthorne, he doesn’t do any one thing great but does everything very well. Solid in coverage and run support but also versatile enough to play all 3 positions. I wouldn’t rule anything out but I don’t see the Vikings going after him. Sounds like we’ll draft 1-2 linebackers and allow some ppl to come in and compete. Could possibly see Erin switched to MLB but more than likely Brinkley will have the oppurtunity to win the job as a 2 down linebacker while Erin and Greenway will stay on the field for passing downs. I think things will start shaking out after the draft and well have a better outlook on things but that looks like the likely scenario right now.

As for Carr, he left town without a deal but they haven’t ruled him out yet.
