WR Jerome Simpson Visiting Vikings

Adam Schefter reported that ex-Bengals WR Jerome Simpson is visiting with the Vikings Saturday.

Simpson finished last year with 50 receptions for 725 and 4 TDs in 16 games. He is 6’2, 190 lbs with ridiculous athletic ability and enough speed to get downfield. While it wouldn’t solve all problems at receiver, Simpson would be an upgrade if he can stay out of trouble.

Simpson plead guilty to a felony drug charge this offseason which resulted in 15 days in jail and 3 years probation. So it would be a risky signing but could eventually pay off if they like what they see in him.

UPDATE: Tom Pelissero states that Simpson was slated to stay the night Saturday night and leave on Sunday if no deal was reached. Spielman appeared on ESPN1500 Sunday morning and said that they were still deciding whether to sign Simpson and have really dug deep into finding more out about Simpson.

How fitting this story comes out on the right date.
    LOL 4/20

Almost sounds like a April fools joke lol.
Hey, sign him up for a year, what do we have to lose…

  3. Lost Viking says:

This is a complicated situation with this free agent. Simpson has served his 15 days but hasn’t received his punishment from the League.

Simpson was found in possession of eight pounds of weed. However, jail sentence revealed good character and no intention of Simpson involvement in distribution. Still League will send a message likely in the form of 4 game suspension.

Any team signing Simpson will be ‘tarnishing the brand’. He’s a simple kid from Coastal Carolina but not an Aquib Talib, Chris Henry or a real turd. Great receiver skills and Bengal coach Lewis thinks highly of his attitude etc. Warwas draws comparison to Cris Carter’s problems before Viking took a chance.

Timing certainly an interesting element. Will Simpson wait until after draft to sign? Will they wait for suspension to be imposed? What contract length involved – Simpson will prefer a ‘prove it’ contract? Then there’s the Viking Stadium drama and how tolerant team will be of character issues.

From a football standpoint the Viking would be lucky to get this guy. But from an overall team view it may be better to look for your receiver at the top of the 2nd round

    Lost,
Some guys have talked about Jenkins the CB, Has off field problems but might be looked at in the 2nd round, depending how the team views it.

Which may some say on signing Simpson…
Allot of the WR,s Jeffereys, Randle, and others will be gone after the 2nd round…

You may be on to something there. Jenkins at #34 may be hard to pass on but I don’t think Vike would be interested. Character issues with Jenkins seem to run past just a little dope now and again.

The need is safety – particularly strong safety. Mock drafts have us going after Harrison Smith; Spielman being a Notre Dame guy.

Last week the Viking started bringing in mid-1st rounders like Floyd and Poe etc. As Spielman’s ability to pump fake has been no better developed than Ponder’s you have to speculate Vike have received some interest in # 3 overall. At least he’s sending that message out.

Best to be prepared for whatever on Thursday.

    dude likes his weed laaaarrrge

wonder if he buys all his stuff in bulk? must be a costco or sam’s club member, huh? bet he likes going on saturdays and sundays, when they’ve got all the free sample munchies. hehe

after he rolls in, light him up with a new contract

  6. Purple Charlie says:

    Guys,
Norse said something about Simpson still being in town, Maybe a deal will happen…

    • Randy Perrin says:

Tom Pelissero reported he’s expected to stay over night and leave tomorrow if they don’t get a deal done. He also said he wouldn’t be surprised if a deal did get done.

      • Lost Viking says:

If Vike make a deal with Simpson will they announce it prior to the draft or delay the announcement?

Don’t know how you could play this but announcing Simpson signing on 2nd day of draft works to Viking advantage. Expect lots of criticism if we sign Simpson.

BTW, anyone recall what the charges against Fred Evans.
