Vikings Trade Back Into Round 1, Select S Harrison Smith

The Vikings made it clear Thursday night that they didn’t want to run with Jamarca Sanford and Mistral Raymond as their starting safties next season. After a trade down early in the 1st round, the Vikings traded back up to the 29th spot and selected safety Harrison Smith out of Notre Dame.

Vikings sent selections 35 and 98 to the Ravens to allow the move into the bottom of the first round.

Harrison gives the Vikings an immediate upgrade at the safety spot and a boost to the secondary which struggled in 2011.

We did good trading back one spot and adding picks. I hope Kalil is a stud for a long time to come but I wanted Claiborne. In hindsight I think we could have gotten Claiborne and still jumped up and landed Reiff. I think Claiborne and Reiff is better than Kalil and Smith. Of course this is hindsight and I may only know diddly. I wished we could have given a later 4th rounder in the Smith trade. I know you can’t trade the 4th rounder given by the league for the loss of FA but we had another one I believe. Of course the Ravens may not have made the trade for anything less. We need to come away with 5 or 6 starters from this draft. Overall a pretty good day. Hopefully today we land some quality players. Go Vikings!!

Hard to pass on Kalil when he is rated head and shoulders above the other OT’s in the draft. The other Tackle’s in the draft must have not been rated very high as there was only one other tackle drafted in the first round. Normally there are 5-6 drafted in Round 1. Smith was a good pick also. On day 1 we end up with two new starters.
Hopefully we can get a few more. One thing we do need is Lb’s, we have no depth what so ever.
    WR, CB, LB’s
    Go Vikes

Vikes have 3 fourth and 3 seventh round picks….they need to package a few picks and move back into the2nd round if possible….There are decent corners and receivers in day two

Only 1 of those 4th round picks (the earliest) can be traded, the other 2 are compensatory picks that cannot be traded. We do have 2 5th round picks to work with though.
