Over at ESPN1500, Tom Pelissero is reporting that Everson Griffen will be starting training camp at linebacker. He also stated that Griffen has been told to report at 265 lbs but is already down to 263 after being listed at 273 lbs last year.
With the defensive end position occupied by Jared Allen who rarely comes off the field and Brian Robison who emerged last year in his first year as a starting player, it’s been a struggle to get Griffen on the field. Griffen who has too much talent to be wasted on the bench, could possibly see snaps at both linebacker and defensive end position in 2012. I’ve been preaching for awhile now that Erin Henderson’s best position could be middle linebacker and if the Vikings were to make that move, it would allow Griffen to slide into the weakside linebacker position. I’d feel more comfortable with Griffen-Henderson-Greenway than I do with Henderson-Brinkley-Greenway. This is all speculation on my part and far too early to know how Griffen will play at linebacker after only getting a few snaps there last year but I do think the move could pay off. For all I know, the Vikings could be planning on using Griffen in a reserve role at both linebacker and defensive end. Either way, should make things even more interesting at training camp that is set to start on July 27th in Mankato.
