TE John Carlson Sprains MCL

The Vikings have suffered their first significant injury of this year when newly added tight end John Carlson suffered a sprained MCL in Tuesdays practice. Carlson faces missing at least 2 weeks and possibly more which could put him out for the entire pre-season. Carlson received 9.1 million in guaranteed money this off-season to come be the Vikings 2nd tight end behind Kyle Rudolph. The biggest question mark with Carlson through his career so far is staying healthy and a big reason people questioned the Vikings giving him so much guaranteed money.

Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s offense focuses on a lot of 2 TE sets and both Rudolph and Carlson were expected to be involved heavily together. With Carlson out, this gives Allen Reisner, Mickey Shuler, and Rhett Ellison time to show what they are capable of with extended reps.

Big setback. Hope he’s ready and healthy for the season. Are you sure they brought him in as a definate #2 TE. I felt he was brought in to compete for the #1 TE spot. He might even have had the inside track.

Musgrave loves 2 TE sets so they both will see the field a lot but Rudolph is a better talent, entering his 2nd year of the offense, Ponders favorite target, more reliable and clearly our best TE. I expect Rudolph to have a huge year this year IMO.

9.1 as in millions? Please clarify. If they did, thats as bad as how Seattle blew it with cindy rice. Why would they throw that guaranteed money at this china doll? They should have gotten more defensive help. Seems really stupid. Especially when Rudolph looks so good.

Yes Millions, sorry didn’t specify in article. Signed a 5 year, 25 million dollar contract with 9.1 of that guaranteed. Musgrave’s offense runs through 2 TE sets so I’m sure that was the thinking behind the Carlson signing but it was a bit of a head scratching decision. A lot of money for a talented but unproven player with a bunch injury problems.

The money is why I say he may have had the inside track as #1. I like Rudolph as well and I know the Vikes plan on using 2 TE’s alot but they way they pursued Carlson and threw the money at him makes me wonder how they ranked them.

I think Allen Reisner would do just fine as the 2 te.
