Kluwe Fined $5,250 for Uniform Violation

Chris Kluwe knew he was going to pay for wearing a makeshift “Vote Ray Guy” patch on his jersey on Sunday, but he was betting that he would get more pub out of it and it would be worth it.

He was right. The Minnesota Vikings punter got the fine from the NFL on Wednesday — the standard $5,250 for a first uniform violation.

“I knew the potential consequences going in,” Kluwe wrote on Twitter. “Don’t cry for me Argentina.”

The Vikings wore patches on their jerseys on Sunday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Upon learning the patch would be on his jersey, Kluwe got some athletic tape, covered the patch on his uniform and made a statement about the punter he believes should be in Canton.

Kluwe acknowledged after the game that “(o)f course, I’m going to get fined. For me, it’s hard to support a Hall of Fame that doesn’t recognize punters.”

I have to agree with Kluwe. Punters (like Ray Guy for example) should have the same opportunity to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as any other player. I can remember watching Ray Guy punt when he played for the Raiders, and it was like thinking “I’m afraid this guy is going to get off another fantastic punt”, and he usually did. It was kind of like the same feeling you get nowadays when Devin Hester is set to return a kickoff or a punt. Something worthy of a highlight reel was about to happen. Kudos to Chris Kluwe for supporting Ray Guy, and punters in general. I don’t see anything wrong with it at all, and I believe he shoudn’t have even gotten fined for wearing the patch. I think the NFL made too much of a big deal over nothing. We all know that they’re good at that. I mean, you can knock the snot out of a Matt Cassel or a Jake Locker, but don’t touch Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady. That’s gonna get you some yellow laundry and 15 yards every time. You go Chris Kluwe, and good luck to you in all of your endeavors.
