Chris Kluwe knew he was going to pay for wearing a makeshift “Vote Ray Guy” patch on his jersey on Sunday, but he was betting that he would get more pub out of it and it would be worth it.
He was right. The Minnesota Vikings punter got the fine from the NFL on Wednesday — the standard $5,250 for a first uniform violation.
“I knew the potential consequences going in,” Kluwe wrote on Twitter. “Don’t cry for me Argentina.”
The Vikings wore patches on their jerseys on Sunday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Upon learning the patch would be on his jersey, Kluwe got some athletic tape, covered the patch on his uniform and made a statement about the punter he believes should be in Canton.
Kluwe acknowledged after the game that “(o)f course, I’m going to get fined. For me, it’s hard to support a Hall of Fame that doesn’t recognize punters.”
