Urlacher close to signing ? He says yes, while Vikings say no.

Brian UrlacherThe Minnesota Vikings and former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher seem to have a distinctly different take on current negotiations between the two.  According to Urlacher, both the Vikings and the Broncos have made firm offers that he is currently mulling over. Urlacher also told sources that he is stromgly leaning towards signing with the Vikings.

So, done deal, right ? ……..Not so fast ! The Vikings are not only saying that they have NOT made an offer, they are saying that they have no interest in Urlacher at all.  So what’s the deal ?  Is Urlacher and his agent blowing smoke in an attempt to garner interest in the former Pro Bowler ? Or are the Vikings simply playing their cards close to the vest just in case Urlacher changes his mind.

One certainty that the team doesn’t want to risk alienating Erin Henderson by giving him the impression that the team is trying to replace or upgrade the position he has been told is his. Speaking of which, sources close to the team are saying that Henderson is furious over the fact that the team is reaching out to the Urlacher camp at all.

Even if the team does bring Urlacher in, it is doubtful that he would be a three down back. He has been fighting various leg injuries over the past three seasons, and it is clear when watching film that he has lost a step.  It is likely that Henderson would still be used as a strongside linebacker on first and second downs, then switch to the middle on passing downs. If this is the case, this move would still be a major upgrade over Jasper Brinkley.

The Dawg has his ear to the ground on this, and updates will be posted as they develop. SKOL !

Source? You are the only one saying he has gotten any offers. You say that is according to Urlacher… where/when did he say this?

Adam, NFL.com reported last Tues. that Urlacher was in discussions with Denver and Minnesota and that he was “leaning towards signing with the Vikings”. This clearly suggests that an offer has been made……at least according to Urlacher. I myself have doubts that an actual offer has been officially made and it’s likely that parameters between the two camps may have been discussed and it’s likely that’s all there was. But if you read my article, I went on to say that Urlacher and/or his agent may be trying to create a market where there doesn’t seem to be one.

Following up, The Chicago Sun-Times origionally ran the story last week. NFL.com picked it up from there. The Sun-Times report came from gossip columnist Michael Sneed. Hope this helps !

Ok, I was confused, I knew all of this happened (nothing ever said about “firm offers, though) days ago and then Frazier directly stated on NFLN that the Vikes were not interested. This article was then posted afterwards, and made the whole “according to Urlacher” leap somehow, I thought you had something new. Given the lack of links, it read as if you’d talked with Urlacher directly. Thanks for clearing that up!

All I have to say is that I really hope that if Urlacher signs, he still has the ability and stamina to perform as well as that 39 year old guy that played for them a couple of years ago. He wore #4. What was his name anyway? It keeps escaping me.
