And the Starter is…

If only I had the final answer. Confusion has reigned, with Coach Frazier suggesting Christian Ponder is the starter, then proceeding to waffle in press conference after press conference. Reports have suggested that Matt Cassel has been taking the most reps in this week’s practices and will likely start. Last we’ve heard, Frazier indicated he wouldn’t name a starter until after Friday’s practice…but that could also mean one hour before kickoff.

Dynamics within the management structure might be playing a role here too. It has been suggested that signing Freeman was an instance where the head coach was overruled by management i.e. Wilf and Spielman. This decision making process seems to have been the M.O. after Frazier lost serious equity by backing Donovan McNabb in 2011. Another variable is the popular conception that Christian Ponder is/was Spielman’s horse. The GM is or at least trying to show savvy by dumping his Ponder shares before the stock hits zero. To wit, Frazier asserted in a press conference this week that the coaching staff would be responsible for choosing the starting QB. If the Vikings are not winning, I wonder how that will play out.

Until I get more, Skol!

It’s interesting to be hearing about the possible rift growing between coaching staff and the front office. It’s starting to play out like the two entities are poising themselves to throw the other under the bus come the eventual failure of this season. I hate to think that another season is getting wasted as the team dynamic is being destroyed for the sake of internal politics, but all signs are pointing that way. No matter what, somebody should (and will) be getting fired after this season.
