Bengals DC Mike Zimmer Meeting With Vikings Today

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is scheduled to interview for the Vikings head coaching vacancy today and then for the Titans on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The 57-year-old has been a coach with the Cowboys, defensive coordinator for seven seasons with the Falcons, and has been with the Bengals as their defensive coordinator since 2008.

The Vikings are also interested in talking to Bengals OC Jay Gruden, whose name has been popping up more and more among NFL circles.

Zimmer is a good choice to interview simply because he’s a defensive guy. I’ve been spouting my jaw off all over various sports sites that defense wins ball games. Ya can’t deny it. Ask the ’72 Dolphin opponents, or the ’85 Bear opponents. With defenses like those, your team can win more than one ball game, 3-0. With the exception of Jay Gruden, (because he’s Jon Gruden’s brother), the Vikings should hire a first and foremost, defensive minded head coach. I ain’t sayin’ that we don’t need upgrades on offense…lord knows we do. There’s been some chatter about the Vikings possibly trading up to the #2 overall in the first round to get who they REALLY WANT. Whoever that is, if indeed such a player exists, is a mystery to me…BUT. my personal take on it is that IF they pull a stunt like this, IF IT INVOLVES ANYTHING TO DO WITH #28 IN ANY WAY, THE ANSWER HAD BETTER BE AN UNEQUIVOCAL NOOO! NO TRADE FOR NOBODY, OR NO PICK OR AMOUNT OF PICKS IS WORTH EVEN CONSIDERING GETTING RID OF ALL DAY!!!! NOOOO FREAKIN’ WAY!!!! Some may disagree, but Y’ALL ARE STUPID!! But if the team CAN trade up to #2,without giving away the whole damn farm, (see Herschel Walker debacle), then they should go get the most talented, NFL ready QB out there, which, IMHO, is Blake Bortles from UCF. He’s got staggering numbers, and word is that he can launch an accurate ball from anywhere on the field, whether or not he’s on the run. Sounds like a good start on a franchise quarterback to me. Of course, this scenario is unlikely to play out, in which case I think that ,if he’s available at #8, then the Vikes should go after the BEST ARM available to them, and again, IMO, that would be Derek Carr, although I’d be keeping a serious eye on Tajh Boyd. He’s mobile, and has a strong arm. At any rate, best of luck to the Viking ball club this coming May. DKOL VIKINGS!!!
