Turner Says Jerick McKinnon Still Vikings Number One Back

Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner says that rookie Jerick McKinnon remains the team’s No.1 running back despite claiming Ben Tate off of waivers yesterday according to Chris Tomasson of theSt. Paul Pioneer-Press.

“We’re excited about Jerick and what he’s done and I see him as our running back,” Turner said. According to the OC, Tate is just an “insurance” policy with McKinnon resting a back injury and Matt Asiata unlikely to play in Week 12 after suffering a concussion last week in a loss to the Chicago Bears.

If Tate is going to threaten McKinnon’s No. 1 status, it is not going to be in Week 12 with just four days to learn the playbook. We would still be surprised if Tate does not see more work going forward in this Adrian Peterson-less backfield.
