Packers vs Vikings – Match Preview

Vikings’ biggest rivals in the NFL are the Green Bay Packers. The rivalry started in 1961 when the Vikings entered the league as an expansion team. Even though the biggest rivals of the Packers are the Chicago Bears, the bitterness of the rivalry with the Vikings was very nicely illustrated in 2008, when Brett Favre expressed his wish to play for the Vikings instead of the Packers. The whole situation escalated and the Packers even filed tampering charges against the Vikings and traded Favre to the New York Jets.

In short, there is no doubt that the rivalry between these two goes deep. As far as winning the division goes, Sporting News picked their favorites and the Vikings were included on the list. Let’s see what the odds are saying, as well as the previous matches between the two teams, etc.

Packers vs Vikings Odds

The online bookies have various odds when it comes to the game, but pretty much all of them are in favor of the Green Bay Packers. The NFL odds at 888 NJ for the Minnesota Vikings to win the game are +150, whereas Packers’ odds are -188. Before we decide who has the better chance of winning, let’s take a look at their previous matches and all of the details.

Previous Matches

The two teams have 117 total meetings. Throughout the history, the Vikings have the longest winning streak, 7 wins in a row, but that was in the period from 1975 to 1978. Packers hold the record for the biggest win in a single match. In 2011, Vikings suffered a 45-7 defeat.

The Vikings won the last game against the Packers 24-17. Packers are slightly in front of the Vikings when you look at the overall score between the two. The regular and postseason record is in favor of the Packers, 60-54-3. During the regular season, Packers have a better record, 59-53-3. The two teams are tied in the postseason, both of them have a single win. The newspapers have been favoring the Packers in previous years, but judging from the preseason, the Vikings are not to be messed with.

John DeFilippo also parted ways with the Vikings, so that can be a potential problem. But, even though the Packers are the marginal favorite, you can never rule the Vikings out. They have shown courage and strength numerous times before and showed everyone that everything is possible if you set your mind to it. Plus, they have excellent fans to show them support whenever they need it. And you know what they say, the fans can be an extra player in every game.

Injuries

The Vikings are struggling a bit with the injuries. They have a couple of players that will definitely miss the first match and a couple of others that are still questionable. Brandon Dillon, Mike Hughes, Harrison Smith, Adam Thielen, and Brian O’Neil are the players that may be fit for the game. David Morgan, Isaiah Wharton, and Ade Aruna are likely to miss it.

One thing is for sure, the rival match will definitely be a spectacle and it will surely exceed the expectations of every fan.
