Jackson Running Scout Team; Still Hoping a Starting Job Remains

Tarvaris Jackson has not only lost his starting job, he’s now running scout team QB for the Vikings, showing just how much faith coach Brad Childress and the team does NOT have in the player that was supposed to take a big step forward in 2008. Jackson is now behind starter Gus Frerotte and while he’s still listed as the two on the depth chart ahead of John David Booty, you have to wonder if the team would really turn to him if Frerotte gets hurt.

Asked if he is still developing as a QB, Jackson told the Pioneer Press he really doesn’t know. “It’s hard to really tell right now,” Jackson said. “Besides the scout team, I’m not getting the reps. I guess when I get back out on the field, you’ll be able to tell whether this process has helped me out or not.” He is hoping that he can get his starting job back sooner rather than later. “Hopefully,” he said. “I’m just taking it one day at a time right now, and however things pan out. . . . I really can’t control it if I’m on the field or not. So I’m just doing what I can.”

Being the scout team QB is a rather humbling experience for Jackson, who many felt would be able to improve in 2008 and get ready to take the Vikings on a playoff run. Instead, he struggled early, and after two bad games was pulled for the veteran Frerotte, who has played well enough to keep the job though the remainder of the first half of the season.

“It’s a lot different going from the starter back to the scout team,” Jackson said. “But you’ve got to take it for what it’s worth and try to get better.” It will be interseting to see if Jackson ever really gets a chance again to regain that starting job with the position he put the team in this season playing poorly and forcing them to make the move so early in the season to Frerotte.
