Chiefs: Five Things To Watch Tonight

As you prepare to watch the Vikings take on the Chiefs in week two of the preseason, here are five things to keep an eye on:

1.       The Reunion:  While it isn’t as exciting as a regular season game, Jared Allen has to be pumped to show his stuff against his old team that was unwilling to give him the contract he was looking for.  However, Allen suffered a supposedly minor injury during practice this week.  If Allen plays, that’s a great sign and he’ll doubtless make an impact, but do not be surprised if the Vikings keep him on the sidelines tonight.

2.       That One Drive:  Brett Favre is expected to play during the first drive only.  However, that drive will probably be as closely scrutinized as any drive all preseason long.  Watch for the Vikings to have a scripted drive that will involve Brett throwing plenty of passes.  The Vikings organization wants Favre to do something like 5 of 7 for 50 yards and a touchdown during this drive in order to quiet all the skeptics like myself.

3.       The Debut:  Percy Harvin was held out of last week’s game as a precautionary measure.  Don’t be surprised to see Harvin returning kicks, lining up in the slot, and also taking a handoff or two.  This will give fans a chance to finally see Harvin in action, and this will give Harvin the chance to also quiet all the skeptics…  again, like myself.

4.       Nickels and Dimes:  The closest training camp battle right now seems to be that of nickel back.  Asher Allen, Benny Sapp, Marcus McCauley, and Karl Paymah are all trying their hardest to earn the spot.  So far, Sapp and Allen seem to be the front runners for the gig.  The Chiefs will be a good test of their run stopping ability (Jamal Charles is no chump, and we should see plenty of him tonight) and expect Asher Allen to finally pull ahead in this race after a few great tackles tonight.

5.       Avoiding the CFL:  The talk of today is that a CFL team has claimed the rights to Tarvaris Jackson, should he be unable to remain employed in the NFL.  That’s a pretty dramatic decline from “possible starter” in just a few days.  While this game means almost nothing to almost everybody, Jackson’s performance tonight could very well seal his fate.  The pressure will be on.

[Editor’s Question:  Do any of you know how the picture of Allen in this article might have come about?  As far as I can tell, the Vikings haven’t scrimmaged or played the Chiefs since Allen came on board the Vikings.  Photoshop?]

Well obviously it was photoshopped. Look at where the jersey meets his right arm. Also, the whole outline of the jersey is too sharp against the background and a little F’d up in the white area under the tattoo on his left arm.

    Good points, Mark. Thanks!

  3. Ted says:

There is no “Vikings” in the center of the jersey above the numbers. Clearly not an actual jersey.

  4. G.P. says:

My money is on 30 no doubt! Benny Sapp is great and what not…
