And Then There Were Nine

The Vikings have announced that yet another of their players will be joining the NFC Pro Bowl squad.

Percy Harvin has been added to the roster despite DeSean Jackson getting more votes.  Jackson was voted into the Pro Bowl as both a wide out and a returner.  Since he received more votes as a receiver he will take that spot on the NFC’s roster.

That technicality left open a spot for return man which has been given to the Vikings first round rookie, Percy Harvin.

“I feel blessed to make it to the Pro Bowl,” Harvin said on Monday. “It is a great honor and humbling to be recognized by the other players and coaches in the NFC. I also want to thank all the fans who voted for me. But the biggest thanks goes to my teammates. I can’t do much of anything without the ten other guys blocking, so really it’s like a special teams honor for all of us.”

According to the story at Vikings.com, Harvin broke three team records this season.  Most kicks returned for a touchdown, most all-purpose yardage by a rookie, and most rushing yards by a wide receiver.

Harvin’s rookie season has exceeded most expectations on a lot of levels.

Prior to the draft, Harvin was labeled as a trouble maker and considered a large risk in the first round.  Harvin has stayed out of trouble all year.

Prior to the draft, many questioned whether or not Harvin was an injury risk that would have a problematic career.  He was able to play every game except for one because of migraine headaches.  Harvin is credited for having started eight games.

Prior to the draft, Harvin was labeled as a “gimmick player” that would not have a regular impact on offense.  Harvin has been one of Brett Favre’s favorite targets this year and he has caught 60 passes for 790 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Prior to the draft, people thought Harvin might be a bad fit for the Vikings because Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor would limit his rushing productivity that he was known for in college.  Harvin carried the ball only 15 times in 15 games, but he gained 135 yards on those carries.  That is 9 yards per carry.

Obviously, Harvin has also been a big part of getting the Vikings special teams back on track after a horrible 2008 campaign.  Harvin returned 42 kicks with an average of 27.5 yards per return, and also 2 touchdowns.

One has to think that Harvin’s success in all phases of the game will make him even more of a focal point in the post season run.

However, as far as the Pro Bowl goes… Congrats young fella!

Congratulations to CO Vike Fans. A baby, how nice. Freds will assume for a minute that you don’t want to name the baby Freds so, Fred recommends Potsie.

Also a congrats to ABV for her two happy dances yesterday. Your old pal Fragile also doubled up on the happy dances.

Congratulations to Percy on being named to the Pro Bowl, (and I’m sorry I called you a pretty boy on a late April afternoon as I lamented us passing on one of several desirable OT’s.)

And congratulations to Freds on being able to do two happy dances. That would get you a flag on the field, my friend.

Congrads to Cheech, he deserves it. I think Freds’ nose is growing, I really doubt he could pull off two happy dances that close together.

  4. CalVkg says:

also upon hearing of his addition to the pro bowl, percy harvin announced he will be organizing a lake m’tonka ice fishing party this weekend for his teammates, complete with female eskimoe lap dancers, specially flown in from atlanta (3 is all they could find, so they’ll be busy)

he guaranteed that no one will find any debauchery at the event, as all ice house windows will be completely fogged over and iced up

Poor Percy! The guy makes his first Pro Bowl, as a rookie no less and he won’t even be there to participate!

  6. bigjohnny84 says:

Very good Cal. You are starting to sound like Freds. (compliment intended)

I may have mentioned it before, but I love me some Percy. He’s ‘electric’. 🙂
