Asher’s Time Might Be Now

The Vikings have received plenty of production out of their 2009 rookie class this year.

First round pick, and offensive rookie of the year, Percy Harvin has turned out to be one of the most explosive slot receivers and return men in the NFL.  Second rounder Phil Loadholt was immediately installed as the team’s starting right tackle and has done a decent job with improvement towards the latter half of the season.  Fifth round pick Jasper Brinkley made an immediate impact on special teams and has been serviceable when asked to fill the shoes of injured E.J. Henderson.  Seventh round pick Jamarca Sanford has been a solid special teams guy and is already slated as a primary competitor in next year’s training camp battle for the starting safety jobs.

Third round pick Asher Allen has been seldom used for some reason.  Allen has played in 10 games, starting one.  In that limited role, he has been fairly impressive, registering 23 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception.

In the beginning of the year, the Vikings seemed to have more faith in Benny Sapp and Karl Paymah than they did Allen.  Now, however, Sapp has proven quite dependable in replacing Antoine Winfield but Karl Paymah has fallen from the coaches’ good graces and is consistently finding himself on the inactives list.

In watching some film of the New Orleans Saints, I could not help but notice that fairly often they use a four wide out set and spread the ball around.  This instantly made me conjure up bad memories of an embarrassing loss to the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football a few years ago.  I calmed down a bit when I thought about how much better this defense is than that one.

Then I started thinking about how important our dime back could suddenly become.

I can’t say with certainty that Asher Allen will be the guy to come in on those situations, but it seems likely to me.

So, for Asher Allen, his time to shine couldn’t have come at a better time.  Let’s hope he is up to the task.

I say this with the utmost certainty Asher is up to the task! Double A works well under pressure. For some high pressure situations breed incompetence for Asher it’s fuel for his fire. The kid played the island as a freshman. I realize he’s in a different ball game now. However its nothing he can’t handle. The kid is scrappy. I believe in the power of Double A. Mark my words Asher Allen future starter!
