It’s Not Nothin’

As you’ve all probably seen by now, Matt Loede posted an ESPN interview with Adrian Peterson today.

I think I can speak for most Vikings fans when I say I was shocked at how nonchalant Peterson was when asked about his tendency to fumble, which was one of the many factors in the Vikings failure to reach the Super Bowl.

“No, it’s not nothin’ that really concerns me at all. It’s something I look forward to working on more during the offseason. Especially with my running style, how I run so aggressive. The majority of time guys are hitting at the ball instead of trying to hit me. That’s something that I’m just more aware of now and I’ll do a better job coming into this season.”

So, since we have some time (oh, say, about 8 months), let’s look at this a little closer.

First, in Peterson’s defense the interview was of the “laid back” variety for much of the segment.  He approached all the questions with an equal lack of concern, for lack of a better word, and appeared to be resisting any type of serious conversation or speculation on all fronts.

Second, I am happy to hear Peterson has not lost his confidence.  We all know that being the best at what you do requires confidence and Peterson’s lack of concern on the issue may just reflect how confident he is that he’ll fix this next season.

Third, the words “I’ll do a better job” do not lack certainty, and I have no reason to doubt him and not consider this a promise of sorts.  Peterson’s growth as a pass catcher, pass blocker, and short yardage back are testaments to his ability to improve his own game.

With all of that being said, Peterson needs to understand that fans in Minnesota don’t want to hear him dismiss the issue.  They want to go back to being certain that their guy is the best in the NFL.

After all, he will likely be getting a very large contract extension pretty soon, and if he doesn’t fix the fumble issues, then it is not unthinkable that Vikings fans would rather see him get that big bonus on another team’s dime in exchange for a quarterback and some draft picks.

Peterson is a bad interviewee….always has been….not too quick on his feet when he’s looking for the right words to say.

I’ve noticed that too Kevin. It might have something to do with his lack of ball security.

Chilly should threaten Adrian with the prospect of spending his evenings at Minneapolis’ gay establishments to learn how to handle balls, if he doesn’t fix it himself.
