Picking On Charley

I generally think that Pioneer Press writer Charley Walters is an idiot.

I still think that.

He has an article that is seemingly trying to provoke drama where none exists between the Vikings and Brett Favre.  After the Vikings have openly stated that Favre will have no deadline for making a decision in regards to his employment status, Walters has created a deadline of his own and pretends that his deadline matters.  His deadline makes me wonder if he has ever followed an NFL offseason.

He says that if the Favre has decided to retire, then the Vikings need to know by March 5th.  That date is when the NFL will first allow trades and Walters claims that Favre’s decision needs to be known so the Vikings can hop into a bidding war for Donovan McNabb or Matt Hasselbeck.

First, if it is March 5th and the Vikings are already admitting they are so desperate for quarterback help in the form of Hasselbeck, then we are in more trouble than we think.

Second, the mid-April would make more sense if the Vikings need to give a deadline to Favre (which they won’t) because it isn’t like the Eagles or Seahawks are going to trade away their quarterback for the first offer they get.  They will drag it for as long as possible in an effort to up the price and a deal may not even be finalized until draft day, so why would March 5th be such a big deal?

Third, giving Favre a deadline would be a major mistake because we have all seen that you do not want to piss that guy off.

Fourth, if he commits to play or not between now and March 5th would anyone on this planet believe him?  I wouldn’t.

Walters also says that Favre needs to make his decision by early March because that is when season ticket owners are first asked to renew.  I am sure that if Favre has decided to retire for good by that point then the Vikings would appreciate him keeping that quiet for a while as even the possibility of Favre coming back will surely help season ticket sales.  That is yet another reason for the Vikings to be okay with him holding off on his decision.

Walters also seems to suggest that Favre may want to retire this year so that he and Kurt Warner can be first-ballot inductees into the Hall of Fame in the class of 2015.  Since when does Brett Favre like to share the lime light with anybody?

To recap, I still think Charley Walters is an idiot…

And is simply trying to pretend like there is something interesting to write about during the Vikings slowest news day in about 13 months.

Charley Walters is a fool, all right. He is, however, still collecting his Pioneer Paycheck. That’s the only thing keeping him from being a complete Idiot.

My wife read this with me. She laughed aloud several times.

One of the better reads of the off-season thus far, Adam.
