Preseason Schedule Announced With Analysis

The NFL has released its preseason schedule today, including the Vikings four opponents.

WEEK ONE:  At St. Louis Rams (time and date to be announced)

The Rams are not a good team and do not appear to be turning that around anytime soon.  They do hold the first overall pick in the upcoming draft, so this will be the nation’s first look at their top choice in addition to all the other rookies selected by both teams.  Brett Favre’s return, or lack thereof, will surely be a top storyline, as well.

WEEK TWO:  At San Francisco Forty-Niners (August 22nd, 7:00 p.m.)

The Niners would likely love to get back at Favre for the heartbreaker he dealt the Niners in 2009.  Unfortunately for them, the preseason doesn’t matter much in that regard.  The re-emergence of Alex Smith could provide some drama to an otherwise storyline-less game.  The “return” of Karl Paymah won’t draw much attention… if he is still on their roster at that point.

WEEK THREE:  Seattle Seahawks (time and date to be announced)

Seahawks fans are sure going to be interested to see what they have in Charlie Whitehurst, Pete Carroll, and their new draft picks.  The first game of the season in the Metrodome is always a nice feeling, as well.

WEEK FOUR:  Denver Broncos (time and date to be announced)

What I like about this matchup is that it gives some of the younger guys on our offense a good look at a solid 3-4 defense.  The Vikings will also be getting a good long look at Brady Quinn in this game, which will provide a bit of interest to the exhibition game.  A big question will be when the NFL decides to schedule this one.  The Vikings are widely believed to be opening the season on Thursday against the Saints, and I am sure they would appreciate being given at least a full week to prepare.
