Rex Ryan: “There Goes Sleeping Well This Week”

Moss Mania has largely caused us to ignore the fact that the Vikings will be playing the New York Jets Monday Night in a very important game from a standings standpoint.

Rex Ryan and Darrell Revis have taken notice of the newest purple player, as well.

“I have a great deal of respect for Randy Moss,” Ryan said in comments distributed by the team.  “He is one of the premier vertical receivers in the game still.  Here we go.  I was kind of thinking, ‘I feel pretty good,’ and then all of a sudden, ‘Hey, Minnesota just traded for him.  There goes sleeping well this week.’  Surely, he be won’t up to complete speed with everybody else, but my brother said he’s a smart guy.  There’s no doubt he’ll be playing this week.”

“Probably so,” Ryan said regarding whether some gamesmanship was occurring in regards to the Patriots’ willingness to trade Moss in time to help the Vikings beat the Jets.  “It’s good for New England the fact that he is playing this week.  It would be real gamesmanship if they trade him back.  That would be the one where it’s like, ‘That’s not right.’  I hope that doesn’t happen.”

Ryan might be full of respect for Moss, but the league’s reigning “top corner” Darrell Revis is not one to give a glowing review of Moss.

“In the second half, you could tell he was putting his foot on the brakes,” Revis said about Moss’ performance against the Jets earlier this year.  “I mean, everybody knows that’s Randy. Sometimes he plays 100 percent, sometimes he doesn’t.”

“You can tell, you can see the effort,” Revis said. “Playing football, you can see the body language and effort of people. If a guy’s going hard or a guy is hesitant . . . that’s the way football is, the truth comes out. You could see it in that game.”

Moss was able to go deep on Revis in the first half of that game but Revis had to exit the game with a hamstring injury that is still nagging him.  In the second half of that game, Antonio Cromartie was essentially able to blanket Moss and shut down his production.

The Revis vs. Moss matchup is always a good one (thanks to each of their willingness to trash talk) but there is no certainty that Revis will take the field Monday night because of the hammy injury.

“I don’t know,” Rex Ryan said of the injury status.  “We’ll see.  He moved out there pretty well today.  He’s not opening up completely, but it was encouraging to get him out on the practice field.  He was working hard.  Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go.   As far as matching up with Moss, I really don’t know where he’s going to play.   Is he left side?  Right side?  Slot?  Who knows?   I think it’s too early to say.  We’re just now game planning.”
