Vikings Considered Trading for Denver QB Orton?

According to Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Vikings considered trading for Denver quarterback Kyle Orton but have backed off. But it wasn’t because of any progress made by Joe Webb, who insiders say is nowhere close to being an effective starter.

Joe Webb…pro jumper, not pro QB

    • Fran the Man says:

It did seem too good to be true that we might already have our starter on the roster. Hopefully the kid just needs another year but there was probably a good reason he was drafted as a WR.

But yeah, the guy can sure jump.

      • Fran the Man says:

I just remembered it was Childo that “Saw” something in him during training camp, to move him to QB.
The fact that Childo, come to find out after 5 years, wouldn’t know a QB from a Stickleback bodes ill for the thought of Webb becoming a starting NFL QB.

MAN! When will the after-effects of Childo ever stop hurting us?

I hate these “SOMEONE INSIDE THE ORGANIZATION” leaks! Sounds like maybe the janitor or ball ball quotes to me.

    Hmm…how soon we forget.
The TD run is cool, but that aint all he did in his 1st NFL start. 17 of 26 for 195 aint bad. No to Orton, Palmer, McNabb, Young. Go with Joe!!!

    • Man of the Norse says:

I completely agree. Also, wasn’t Charley the same guy who said we signed Longwell to a 2-year deal? How accurate was that?

  4. fozz44 says:

Kyle Orton does nothing for me….especially if they need to make trade just to get him….wow.

I’m seeing Palmer and Kolb as the only guys that could make these guys a big time contender in 2011.

  5. CSlinde says:

I like the idea of Palmer. Get 2-3 yrs out of him then see what Joey can do!

I know you guys are true Vikings fans. You must understand that there is a possible chance that people say things to put up a smoke screen for the upcoming draft and free agent market. If the Vikings were to say that Webb was as worthless, as well say Jackson. Everyone would know our depseration.

  7. Supertaco says:

Does anyone know of a list of Shooters predictions over the years? This guys has to be about 5% accurate. Seriously.

  8. Lost Viking says:

Thank you, Super. Think you nailed it.

  9. Chris aka vikesdynasty says:

joe will never be an every sunday starter, end of story. the fans are all delusional hes a poor mans michael vick. the only qb’s that win now a days are pocket passing qb’s who are somewhat mobile or have super defenses. and we have neither….yet

  10. LeCount80 says:

Dont be so sure about Joe just yet. The story isnt ended, its has just begun. This, that, or the other, the guy looked pretty good in his limited time with limited practice last season. Is he the future? I dont know, but you cant just write the guy off so soon without anything to go on.

  11. Ole says:

I have serious doubts about the Viking’s interest in Orton

But I am sure that Charlie Waters has “adonis DNA” and “Tiger Blood”

Usually, Waters is high on a drug called “Charlie Sheen”

Webb is fun to watch, but he is not ready to be a starter…. not sure if he ever will be. Why in the world would Frazier even think about giving Webb the starting role, especially when there are experienced QB’s out there that we could get? I would say to do what you can to get Palmer for 4 or 5 years, draft a quarterback ONLY if there is one they REALLY like that fell to us. We have plenty of needs besides qb in the draft. A drafted QB is good for us in 2-3 years, but they cant draft one and have him holding the clipboard for Joe Webb. If Frazier does see Webb having the potential to be a starter in the next couple years, Mcnabb would probably be his best mentor because he had a similar style back in the day.

Personally, I would like to see Palmer as starter, with Locker learning behind him.

  13. Fragile Freds says:

Just curious, how many fd passes has Joe Webb thrown in his pro career?? Fred realizes jj has only played in a few games, but how many? 4 or so?

  14. LeCount80 says:

3/04 Hot off the Wire: Vikings | Coordinator likes what he sees from Joe Webb: Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said…[+] he likes what he has seen from QB Joe Webb while watching tape, reports Sid Hartman, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. ‘He’s a great athlete and looks like he’s got some composure and poise to him as well. He made some good decisions and some good judgments. I like the way he climbs up in the pocket, keeping his eyes downfield,’ Musgrave said.

Dont know about FD, but his stats in his two career starts(both on the road) are….

    37-58 63.8%
    340 yds
    0 Tds, 1 INT

    11 rushes for 66 yds, 1 TD

Not enough to make any judgment, but in my eyes does show potential.
Anyone who watched the Philly game, saw that he at least deserves a chance.
